Impact of Sugar on Children's Teeth

Posted on 10/24/2022 by SRD Muscle Shoals
Impact of Sugar on Children's TeethChildren love eating sugary foods such as sweets, cakes, or biscuits. Frequent consumption of these sugary foods exposes their teeth to harmful acids that make them susceptible to tooth cavities and decay. Here are ways that sugar can affect the teeth of your child:

Produces Harmful Acid

Multiple bacteria live in your mouth. Some are helpful to your health, while others pose various health problems. The harmful bacteria tend to produce toxic acid when they digest sugars. The acids corrode minerals from your tooth enamel, leaving it susceptible to cavities and decay. Brushing and flossing the baby's teeth is the best way to prevent the severe repercussions of high sugar intake.

Lowers the PH of your Mouth

Sugar attracts terrible bacteria to your teeth that will cause dental plaque and other dental issues in the long run. The plaque will make the mouth more acidic and will lead to the formation of cavities, it will also cause your mouth's PH to drop and become very acidic. The acid will dissolve the tooth minerals and also destroy the enamel of your teeth. Acidity progressively weakens a baby's teeth, and tiny holes will slowly start developing which will later develop into cavities and tooth sensitivity.

Sugary Drinks and Foods Damage the Teeth

Your baby should avoid foods processed with sugars as they leave a residue on the teeth, which will later damage their teeth. If your baby is consuming foods and drinks with sugars, ensure you brush their teeth as soon as possible.

Foods and drinks containing refined sugars, such as soda, ice cream, biscuits, or candy, are harmful to your baby's teeth. Ensure you opt for healthier alternatives, such as foods that contain fiber, vegetables, and fruits. You also opt for healthy natural juices. If you note any cavities or tooth decay on your baby's teeth, visit the dentist immediately for prompt action.
