Underbite Causes and How To Fix

Posted on 5/9/2022 by SRD Muscle Shoals
Underbite Causes and How To FixAs a result of an underbite, the lower teeth stick out further than the upper teeth. It is estimated that 5-10% of the world's population suffers from an underbite.

When left untreated, underbites can negatively impact everything from self-esteem to sleep quality.

What Is An Underbite?

Underbite results from the bottom teeth jutting out more than the upper teeth in a misaligned bite. As well as underbite, mandibular prognathism is also referred to as Class III malocclusion.

If prognathism is moderate to severe, the face can take on a "bulldog" appearance due to the protrusion of the bottom jawbone. Aside from its appearance, this is one of the most severe conditions that can affect the jaw, teeth, and face.

An underbite is known as a "bad bite" since it can be detrimental to both your dental health and general health. A person with an underbite may have several causes, such as genetics, environmental factors, or other conditions.

Fixing an Underbite

Orthodontic therapy, tooth extraction or reshaping, underbite surgery, and "facelift" dentistry are all methods for correcting an underbite.

The type of underbite treatment your orthodontist will recommend is determined on the severity of your underbite. Orthodontics can be used to address underbite in children. If you have an underbite caused by bone difficulties, you will need surgery to address it.

Underbite Symptoms

Speech difficulty, jaw or mouth discomfort, frequent headaches, TMJ pain, earaches, stomach disorders, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, bruxism, and hypertension are all common symptoms of an underbite.

An underbite is not a difficult problem to detect. Even in younger children, the diseases and symptoms are frequently evident and straightforward for our dentists to detect. The degree of the malocclusion influences the symptoms of an underbite. The most noticeable sign is a prominent protrusion of the lower jaw past the top front teeth. Tooth overcrowding and jaw pain are also fairly frequent.
