Panoramic X-rays Provide More Detail Than Traditional X-rays

Posted on 8/24/2020 by SRD Muscle Shoals
Panoramic X-rays Provide More Detail Than Traditional X-raysMany people have concerns with x-rays, and understandably so. Thankfully, dental x-rays are very safe. They are also extremely helpful and necessary in proper dental health. Although some traditional x-rays are still used, the panoramic x-ray is the most efficient and thorough.

What is a Panoramic X-ray?

A panoramic x-ray, also called panoramic radiography, uses an imaging machine that rotates around the head, giving the dentist a view of your entire mouth, including the upper and lower jaws, and all surrounding tissues, every tooth, and even in between the teeth. All of this can be viewed in just one panoramic image, compared to a traditional x-ray, which takes many images, causing your dentist to have to use several of these images to piece together your entire oral picture.

Panoramic X-ray is Best

Less imaging means less radiation exposure, and that is a huge plus of the panoramic x-ray. Although dental x-rays, even the traditional type, give off very little radiation, keeping it to a minimum is always a good idea.

The panoramic x-ray is simply more comfortable, as it gives you the ability to stand, and it is over with quickly. If you have ever experienced traditional dental x-rays, you were probably seated and went through several bite plates and images. Many images are necessary using this method, so it just takes more time. None of us want to spend more time that necessary sitting still with bite plates in our mouths. Traditional x-rays simply mean longer periods of discomfort.

The panoramic image, due to its capability to capture every bit of your mouth and teeth, allows your dentist to find cavities in between teeth, that may otherwise be found once they are farther along, possibly causing you pain, time, and more money.

All in all, the panoramic dental x-ray is quicker than traditional, gives your dentist one entire image of your mouth to focus on, is more thorough, safe, and cost effective.
