Does Your Spouse Need to Go to the Dentist? How to Start the Convo

Posted on 10/15/2025 by Singing River Dentistry - Muscle Shoals
Couple smilingWe all know that regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. But what about our spouses? Sometimes, it can be difficult to know how to approach the subject of dental care with them, especially if they haven't been to the dentist in a while.

Here are a few tips on how to start the conversation about dental care with your spouse:

1. Choose the right time and place.

Don't try to have this conversation when you're both stressed or busy. Pick a time when you can both relax and talk openly. It's also important to choose a private place where you won't be interrupted.

2. Start by expressing your concern.

Let your spouse know that you're concerned about their oral health and that you want to help them take care of their teeth. You can say something like, "I've noticed that you haven't been to the dentist in a while, and I'm worried about your teeth. I know it can be scary, but I think it's important for your health."

3. Be understanding and supportive.

If your spouse is hesitant to go to the dentist, try to be understanding. They may have had a bad experience in the past, or they may be afraid of the pain. Let them know that you're there to support them and that you'll go with them to their appointment if they need you to.

4. Talk about the benefits of good oral health.

Remind your spouse that good oral health is important for their overall health. Poor teeth can lead to a number of problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, and even heart disease. Explain that by taking care of their teeth, they're actually taking care of their whole body.

5. Offer to help them find a dentist.

If your spouse doesn't have a dentist, offer to help them find one. You can ask your friends and family for recommendations, or you can search online for dentists in your area. There are also many resources available to help people find affordable dental care.

6. Be patient and persistent.

It may take some time to convince your spouse to go to the dentist. Be patient and persistent, and don't give up. Their health is worth it.

By following these tips, you can start a conversation with your spouse about dental care that is both productive and helpful. Remember, the most important thing is to show your spouse that you care about their health and well-being.

With your support and encouragement, they'll be more likely to take the steps necessary to achieve good oral health.
