There is nothing as annoying as sitting down for one of your favorite meals and finding that while everyone else in your family is enjoying the taste of the food, it does not taste as good to you as it did in the past. There are a lot of explanations why your food may not taste as good as you remember, and some of those reasons have a dental component.
Your Taste Buds
Your food tastes good because of the taste buds located on your tongue. Your tongue can have as many as 10,000 taste buds, which, together with your nose, give you the delicious aroma and taste of your food. Your taste buds are located all over the top of your tongue, and they sense four distinct tastes: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Without them, all of your food would taste bland and boring.
When Your Taste Buds Have an Issue
If your food does not taste as delicious as it used to, there could be several explanations. First, if you have a cold or allergies, your food will not taste as good if you are congested because your nose doesn't work as well. Also, if you have a geographic tongue or a fissured tongue, there are times you will not be able to taste your food in the same way because of the cracks and patches on the surface of your tongue. Luckily, these patches and cracks appear and disappear, so this temporary loss of taste will not last.
Have you looked at your tongue lately? If it looks yellow or white, you may have thrush, a fungal condition that will go away with treatment. Thrush often appears when you take corticosteroids for allergies, infections, or asthma. If you think you might have thrush, it is time to give your doctor or our dentist a call because medication can resolve the issue.
If you do not have thrush, a good tongue cleaning each day may help your taste buds. You can clean your tongue after meals by gently brushing it with toothpaste or a tongue scraper. Not sure what is going on with your taste buds? Why not give our office a call for a dental appointment?
