I Am Allergic to Dairy. How Can I Get Calcium Into My Diet?

Posted on 5/1/2024 by SRD Muscle Shoals
carafe of milk being poured into a glassThe American Medical Association estimates that as many as 5 percent of all Americans are allergic to dairy, and 70 percent of people have some lactose intolerance, an enzyme found in dairy. Usually, dairy allergies lead to stomach issues, such as bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Because dairy products are a primary source of calcium, which your teeth desperately need, how can you incorporate calcium and vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium, into your diet?

Why Is Calcium So Important?

Both vitamin D and calcium are vital to your teeth. Calcium and vitamin D help keep your teeth strong and healthy. Calcium keeps the enamel that covers your teeth hard, which helps your teeth keep the bacterial acids that cause cavities away. It also helps preserve your tooth enamel against the constant erosion you put your teeth through each day through eating, brushing, and flossing. Without calcium, your teeth will erode more quickly and will not be able to replace worn enamel. They are also more prone to cavities.

What Are Some Alternatives to Dairy?

If you cannot eat dairy, do not worry. There are alternatives to dairy that can also provide calcium. First, you can try several dairy alternatives, such as almond milk and yogurt products, soy products such as soy milk, tofu, and tempeh, and even coconut milk.

Second, there are other foods you can use that can replace dairy and give you both calcium and vitamin D. Chia seeds are a great source of calcium and a popular additive to smoothies. You can also find lots of calcium in dried figs. White figs and edamame are also great sources of calcium.

In the past, you would have to go to several places to pick up dairy-free options. Now, a visit to your local vegan or vegetarian grocery store can give you lots of options for a dairy-free life that includes calcium.
