How To Remove Stains From Dental Bridges

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are custom-built appliances that bridge missing teeth. The bridge consists of two parts: the pontic (false tooth) that bridges the gap left by your extracted teeth and an abutment that anchors the pontic to the jaw bone. Your dentist customizes the color of your pontic to match the natural color of your teeth.

What Stains Dental Bridges?

The pontics that form dental bridges are made of porcelain, resin, zirconium, or composite. These materials are not stain-proof. Over time, your dental bridges get stained, and this significantly lowers their appeal. The common causes of external discoloration in dental bridges include smoking, skipping cleaning appointments, overconsumption of sugary foods, and poor oral hygiene.

How To Remove Stains

Whitening solutions that work to remove stains from teeth can also help with stain removal in dental bridges. A dentist will professionally wash away stains from your dental bridge. Many methods can be used, but laser whitening is widely used today. Here, the dentist will make a thick bleaching solution and paint it on your dental bridge. They will then use laser technology to activate the bleach, which will whiten your teeth.

You can also whiten your dental bridge at home using a simple and relatively safe procedure. You simply need to mix hydrogen peroxide and water in equal portions and use a toothbrush to scrub this solution on the affected portions of the bridge. Rinse thoroughly after scrubbing. If some traces of stain remain, then try substituting the hydrogen peroxide with baking soda. This will get the job done.

Brush and rinse your dental bridge regularly with mouthwash to slow down the staining process. You cannot completely prevent staining, but with proper dental hygiene and routine professional cleaning, you can retain the pearly white appeal of your dental bridge for longer.
