Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by SRD Muscle Shoals
Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?If you are scheduled for a root canal treatment, you may be worried that it will be a painful experience. This is a misconception many patients have regarding the treatment. In fact, root canal therapy is aimed at relieving dental and facial pain. Patients will leave the dental office feeling much better compared to when they came in.

How Does the Therapy Work?

During the procedure, a dentist administers a numbing agent or local anesthesia. This way, the patient will remain comfortable and have no pain as the dentist works to treat the tooth. All the infected pulp tissue is removed and the area is disinfected. The dentist fills the hole with synthetic material and seals the tooth. A customized crown is placed to offer additional protection.

The Pain is Due to an Infection

While the procedure will not hurt, your tooth does, and it is the reason you are out there to get the treatment in the first place. What you feel during the procedure is the pressure the dentist applies during the treatment. If you are having long-term root canal therapies, a dentist may provide other kinds of sedation in case you need help to feel calm. Therefore, you should not get worried about any pain when receiving a root canal.

After the Procedure

Once the local anesthesia is gone in the hours following the root canal therapy, you might have some sensitivity and tenderness. However, the sensitivity is minor and you can manage it easily using over-the-counter pain relievers. A dentist suggests that you consume soft foods so that you do not hurt the healing tooth. Avoid chewing on that tooth until you have the discomfort subside. In most cases, you should get to work or other activities shortly. The sensitivity will only last a few days.
